Michigan: Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes Up North

The sand dunes are cool; what are these giant sand dunes doing so far from the water? From the bottom, you can't tell that what looks like the top of the dune is just a plateau before the next part starts. But, we gamely made it all the way to the top of the second dune. In fact, Harrison went up and down a couple of times. :-)
